Overview

 

Professional and public education in child maltreatment is one of the largest programs of CCAN. On both state and national levels, physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, child protective service personnel, tribal and Indian Health Service professionals, and advanced students in numerous disciplines benefit from these programs. Tricia Gardner, JD, is the Director of Professional Education for CCAN and can be contacted for more information about each of the training programs.


Post-Doctoral Programs Available

 

Advanced training in pediatric psychology and child clinical psychology have been integral parts of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) since the 1960's. Pediatric Psychology post-doctoral fellows participate in a variety of activities on medical inpatient units, the consultation and liasion service, and in medical and psychological outpatient clinics. Child clinical therapy and assessment experiences are also avaiable. The Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (CCAN) provides in-depth training in a broad range of clinical and research aspects in child maltreatment. In addidition, experiences are also available in neuropsyuchological assessment and child clinical assessment and treatment. The faculty includes seventeen psychologists and other medicatl health professionals to provide supervision and mentoring. To download a copy of the application instructions please click here. List of CCAN Programs

 

CHILD ABUSE MEDICAL EXAMINER TRAINING

This two day conference focuses on identifying physical signs of child abuse, as well as working with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, and the court system. The objectives of this course include defining the role of a Child Abuse Medical Examiner and providing information so the participants will be able to correctly diagnose physical and sexual abuse in children. CHILD WELFARE TRAINING PROGRAM

This program organizes and implements the training for all levels of child welfare workers across the state of Oklahoma. This includes CORE, Levels I, II and III, miscellaneous, and annual Supervisor training. INTERDISCIPLINARY TRAINING INITIATIVE FOR UNDERSERVED CHILDREN (ITIUC)

ITIUC is a is a specialized program for graduate students in psychology. The ITIUC is one of 18 graduate psychology programs funded nationally by the Health Resources and Services Administration to increase the number of trained psychologists to work with this special population of children.

INTERDISCIPLINARY TRAINING PROGRAM IN CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT (ITP)

ITP is a graduate training program for advanced students in medicine, law, psychology, social work, nursing, public health, and related disciplines. The ITP admits 20 students each year and has graduated 250 students to date.

JUVENILE SEX OFFENDER TRAINING CONFERENCE

This annual conference is funded by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to provide updated training to professionals in the State of Oklahoma who provide treatment, probation, and legal services to juvenile sex offenders.

NATIONAL CENTER ON SEXUAL BEHAVIOR OF YOUTH

The Center is designed to provide states, territories, and the District of Columbia with information and assistance in the management of children with sexual behavior problems and adolescent sex offenders.

OKLAHOMA CONFERENCE ON CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT AND HEALTHY FAMILIES

This annual conference is a three day event that utilizes local and national faculty on major topics in the prevention, intervention, and treatment of child abuse and neglect. The Oklahoma State Department of Health and U.S. Attorney’s Offices in Oklahoma and Kansas are co-sponsors.

PROJECT MAKING MEDICINE (PMM)

Project Making Medicine (PMM) is a national training program for mental health professionals from tribal and Indian Health Service agencies in the prevention and treatment of child abuse. PMM is funded by a grant from the Indian Health Service and the Office of Child Abuse and Neglect in HHS.
