Sonja Atetewuthtakewa spent her 20 year career in child welfare dedicated tot he protection and treatment of Native American children and families. She spent 2 1/2 years as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Center on Child Abuse and Neglect prior to her death in 2000. This award is to honor her dedication to protecting Native American children and families.

The Sonja Atetewuthtakewa Award for Distinguished Service in the Protection of Native American Children will be awarded to the nominee during the opening ceremonies of the 16th Annual Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect at the Clarion Meridian Hotel and Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
