The Center on Child Abuse and Neglect will be seeking nominations for the

Sonja Atetewuthtakewa Award

for
Distinguished Service in the Protection of
Native American Children


 

The Center on Child Abuse and Neglect will be seeking nominations of Oklahoma Native Americans who have worked or volunteered in the protection of Native American children who have been abused or neglected. The nominee should be a Native American individual who works in Oklahoma and who has demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment and service in the protection of Native American children through direct service, administration, volunteerism or advocacy. This includes but is not limited to:


 
  • Parents
  • Foster Parents
  • Child Protective Service Workers
  • Prosecutors
  • Mental Health & Medical Professionals
  • Indian Child Welfare Staff
  • Law Enforcement
  • Teachers
  • Victim Advocates
  • Judges

 

Sonja Atetewuthtakewa spent her 20 year career in child welfare dedicated tot he protection and treatment of Native American children and families. She spent 2 1/2 years as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Center on Child Abuse and Neglect prior to her death in 2000. This award is to honor her dedication to protecting Native American children and families.

The Sonja Atetewuthtakewa Award for Distinguished Service in the Protection of Native American Children will be awarded to the nominee during the opening ceremonies of the 16th Annual Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect at the Clarion Meridian Hotel and Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
