Laura McGuinn is a developmental and behavioral pediatrician who has been with the OUHSC Child Study Center since October of 2004. After completing medical school, pediatric residency and chief residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX in 1996, she entered private pediatric practice and served as a hospital-based pediatric residency teaching attending serving children with special health care needs in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. In 1998, she left Galveston to complete a 3-year fellowship in developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. A desire to improve developmental screening quality in primary care led to her fellowship research. The project entailed modifying the routine infant physical examination by incorporating standardized developmental screening items to accomplish the exam and screening simultaneously.
Following fellowship, from 2001-2004, she was faculty in the Austin Medical Education Program, a residency teaching practice associated with the Children’s Hospital of Austin in Austin, Texas. There she worked with an interdisciplinary diagnostic team evaluating infants and toddlers with developmental delay, behavioral problems, and regulatory disorders. Her primary interests involve medical student and resident education, parent-child interaction, and patient-physician relationships. Her current research explores the effect of patient and family centered care on patient outcomes. |
